     Hello Raider nation,
First let me say that i am deeply saddened that Jack Tatum has passed today(as all in raider nation have). My dad was a ohio state fan(alum) so i became a fan and grew up hearing about jack-even saw him play against the Illini in 1969.Jack was the Ronnie Lott of his day.I would say that Jack was probably one of the BEST safeties the Raiders have ever had(on a short list).Jack was a HUGE reason why i became a Raiders fan.He would literally knock the snot out of you.Who can forget the hit he put on sammy white in super bowl xi(knocking his helmet off).jack's position coach at ohio state was the legendary Lou Holtz.May you rest in peace jack...My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time.

Title: I'll never forget standing next to Jack Tatum at Ricky's last November...
Post by: Randy on July 28, 2010, 01:11:12 AM
The passing of Jack Tatum....what a shock! I was standing right next to him in Ricky's just last November...

I'll never forget it. Crusader Raider and Dave Chapman were in town from England for their annual Raiders pilgrimage. We were riding their coat-tails as usual......when Ricky and his wife Tina heard that Keith and Dave would be coming to Ricky's for the Raiders Rally the night before the game, they made us all V.I.P.s. We arrived about an hour before the Raiders Rally was scheduled to start, and when we walked into Ricky's....they still had another event in progress....the Manny Pacquiao vs Miguel Cotto fight on pay-per-view. We walked in right at the height of the fight, they put VIP bracelets on each of our wrists, and we were ushered into the "VIP Room" in the back of Ricky's where the fight was on a big screen. Several Raiders and ex-Raiders were in the room.

After the fight was over, and the Raiders Rally began, we were having a good time, listening to Raiderhed perform. I was standing by the bar ordering a beer, and I looked over and saw Jack Tatum sitting at a table right next to me....about 6 feet away. He was talking to a young black guy in his early 20's probably. I missed the beginning of their conversation, but when I started listening....Jack was explaining something to him....saying something about hitting players hard, as he demonstrated with his hands how he would hit. The young guy looked at him, and it was like a lightbulb went on in his head, as the realization hit him as to who he was talking to. His eyes got big, and he asked...."THAT WAS YOU?"  Jack smiled, looked back at him, slowly nodded his head up and down.... and answered, "yep......that was me", as his head kept nodding, and he kept smiling.

Title: R.I.P Tatum
Post by: RaiderWildeStyle on July 28, 2010, 01:55:52 AM
If moustaches are synominus with the early dayS of this football team. As can be linked to the line of the Autumn wind. 'with a bristly black moustache'

i think Tatum holds so many other traits of that poem. When i hear the line of 'knock them upside down and laugh when they conquered and won' u don't think of Ray Guy on that line. U think of the hard hitting Tatum.

I think it's safe to say that within the last 2 years the raiders have lost their best guard and best safety to heart attacks. It's a real shame his loss! My thoughts are with his friends, family and fans- may u rest in peace Assassin.

There are Still thousands of #32 Jerseys at the Coliseum along with My own that proves your memory will never fade from our Nation. Your style of play is one that has yet to be equaled from those golden years. 36 years ago.......Now that's a Fuckin Legend! Bless you and your family at this very hard time and know that the entire Raider Nation is saddened by this Loss.

Post by: NEBRASKARAIDER on July 28, 2010, 04:05:17 AM
I was not around in the days when Football was considered an all contact sport, when you didn't see yellow hit the ground from almost ripping a Quaterbacks head off or close lining a man just to have the edge on him. But I have to say those are the days when football was in its prime & Jack Tatum fit perfectly in with the Raider mystique of hard hitting, make you fear the hell out of us, because on Sunday there's a high probability that you wont be getting off the field in one piece. My favorite Raider hit ever was when Tatum separated Vikings WR Sammy White from his helmet stood up & threw his hands down at him in Super Bowl XI.

JACK TATUM, CLASSIC RAIDER FOOTBALL FOREVER!

Jack Tatum was the quintessential Oakland Raider. He was a great player for the greatest organization in the history of Pro Football. This season is for you Jack, I just wish you could have stuck around to see the Raiders return to greatness. But I hope our defense takes your spirit with them to the field every sunday this season...RIP Jack Tatum Raider 4 life

RIP TATUM.  But don't give the impression Jack Tatum wasn't a dirty player.  Raider fans won't like this but the hit on stingley was very dirty.  The ball wasn't catchable.  Tatum, like he loved to do hit the man leading with his helmet.  No one also seems to remember when Little Wendell Tyler ran Tatum over in a game against the Rams.

Nothing wrong with a big hitter but Tatum was a known head-hunter.

You still continue to bash Raider players, yet you then follow it up by saying if  ( INSERT PLAYER) WOULD HAVE DONE THIS THEN YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN OFFENDED. I AM OFFENDED BY YOU ALWAYS BASHING RAIDER PLAYERS, U DIG?
Title: Re: Rest In Peace
Post by: Millernation on August 30, 2010, 09:06:10 PM
Why are you offended. Why is expressing the truth (from what I see of it) bashing a raider player.  First, are they above bashing? Jamarcus Russell was bashed all the time.  Being a Raider fan doesn't change reality for either of us.  Was the woman from Illinois bashing Raider players with her call to the Boneline?

My belief is that some of those here are upset about me calling Tatum, and particularly that hit, dirty would have called someone like Mel Blount dirty if he had done it to a Raiders receiver.  I bash who needs to be bashed and praise who needs to be praised, U DIG?

Slagging off a great Raider player like Jack Tatum is fucked up, especially so soon after his passing, its totally out of order. Millernation you're a disgrace to the Raider Nation and you should be ashamed of yourself. I'm not going to stoop to name calling but some of the shit you come out with is uncalled for. You need some dignity and some class and should stop posting until you get some! Go Raiders!!!

I forward your post to Sarah Palin.  She will be contacting you very soon.  Tatum was a head-hunter.  He used his helmet as a weapon and took shots at other players heads.  A targeted forearm to the helmet after a play is dirty.  Even in the Sammy white hit he lead with his helmet and it was a helmet to helmet hit.

Tatum...Even in the Sammy white hit he lead with his helmet and it was a helmet to helmet hit.

Helmet to helmet became illegal in 1996. Tatum retired in 1980.

Never said it was illegal back then.  But as a player you were always taught not to use your helmet as a weapon or lead with your head.  Sorry Raidernitemare, I didn't know Raidernation was a gang.    Looks like for some of you, being a raidernationnaire means disregarding any reality distorting your view of the raiders or any of their players (except JM)

PED weren't illegal in Baseball yet those who took them are called cheaters.  You want to honor the Raider history, you honor both the good and the bad

Hello Raider Nation,
Like you ALL i was deeply saddened with the passing of George Blanda. I remember back in 1970 when George had a Great year as a comeback player (kicking those field goals as ONLY George Could). He inspired America that you can accomplish anything and that age was just a number. I was a 10 year old child when this happened and i still marvel at what George has accomplished! He played in 340 games-no other player has done that. He also led the now defunct Houston Oilers to two titles in 1960,1961. Al Davis obtained George's rights for a $100 waiver fee - best 100 dollars he has Ever spent i imagine! I talked to Les Husman. He played for the Chicago Cardinals against Blanda's led Bears in the mid 50's-quite a rivalry in the windy city. They were also teammates on the Houston Oilers staff-the stories he told are priceless! You are Dearly Missed George and Raider Nation is forever Grateful!!!! I'll be at Molly's sportsbar tonight wearing a Raiders shirt and making a toast to George! My thoughts and prayers are with the Blanda family. Thanks for the memories George! :O) God Bless!! :O)

George Blanda > Brett Favre.

Brett might hold the records, But George Blanda was the CONSUMATE IRONMAN.. Playing football so late into his age, & to play back in a era when the bumps were louder and the bruises were harder.

Seabass needs to watch footage where Blanda took us to the playoffs on that 50+ yarder against the KC Cheifs!!!

Yeah, I remember when Al decided to cut him...when Blanda almost 49. Blanda was disappointed, and tried to get Al to change his mind (if I remember right...after all it was 35 years ago), because George wanted to make it to 50 and still be an NFL player.

You're right.  He felt at least he could have kicked extra points.  Blanda at 80 would have had a better passing rating then Jamarcas Russell

Obviously I wasnt around then, but Phil V was on Sirius today (9/28) and said that he remembered Al drafting a kid from Boston College and that Blanda showed up at Camp (after a Spring/Summer full of nothing but golf!!!) and starred at this kid the everytime he kicked the ball...

...Phil said the kid was so intimidated that he couldn't have made a 2 yard field goal!!!

George eventually got cut during the final cuts, and at that time if you were part of the final cuts you couldn't return to that team.

The kid from BC that Al drafted only made it a few weeks before Al brought in another Veteran kicker and that guy got the Super Bowl ring that year, that George always wanted.

Blanda has been one of the names i've always known as a Raider, going back to listening to my father teach me about football and the raiders.

He will be missed.

Some great words about the the late great George Blanda courtesy of another RAIDER great, Phil Villapiano.

"In all honesty" says former Raiders LB Phil Villapiano, "when I missed a tackle or made a bad play out there, I would rather walk off the field in front of John Madden than in front of George Blanda. Madden would yell. George would jump down your throat. He was such a competitor, a perfectionist. In football that's the way I always wanted to be.

"Everyone knows the wild Raider stories. We used to have this air hockey tournament, and when it was all done we'd set up this awards banquet and have dinner and have a little fun. One year George didn't participate and a food fight erupted, and all the local TV cameras were there to catch it. Ha ha, those wacky Raiders.

"Well, the next day Blanda caught up to me. He said I was a disgrace to the Oakland Raiders, that I was ruining the team. I really felt bad about it. One of my teammates said, 'To hell with the old man.'

"I said, 'Not that old man.' When George Blanda spoke you listened."

Albo, a close friend of owner Al Davis, was a familiar figure at training camp and team practices.

Greg's mom Sarah Louzao passed away with Greg by her side in Redding, California on June 11th. Greg will be out of town taking care of business at his mom's house until after her memorial service next Thursday June 23rd.

I want to express my sympathy to Greg and his family in his time of loss. Greg lost his father in 2004, so the passing of his mom now is especially hard for him. They had a very close relationship and as you can imagine Greg was a very supportive and devoted son.

Raiders mourn the loss of Alonzo "Skip" Thomas

We are saddened by the passing of Alonzo “Skip” Thomas. He proudly wore the Silver and Black from 1972-1977. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He was a true warrior, a great Raider and will be sorely missed.

Post by: The Legend Killer on October 08, 2011, 02:49:54 PM
I just saw that Mr Davis passed away....I am beyond words and incredibly sad right now. Mr Davis was the ULTIMATE RAIDER he was the Raiders and while I know he affected our team somewhat in the later years he always was Mr Raider. The nation lost our leader but the world lost a great football man. Thank you Mr Davis for all you did for football and thank you Mr Davis for EVERYTHING that is Raiders.

I hope that Randy and Greg will put together a podcast, celebrating the life of Al Davis.

Rest in peace, Al.

I have to say its a great thing to see the entire sports world coming together to recognize AL DAVIS & HIS RAID-UHS for all he has given & the influence to which he embodied as a man. My belief is one thing a man can control in their life is the respect they receive. AL demanded respect as he deserves it. When asked by opposition "What do you think about AL?" My reply is simple, "I respect him." Only had a chance to see AL DAVIS once in KC. He was on the bus after the game & as they pulled out of the gates, MR. DAVIS held his fist up with a huge "Just Win Baby" grin as he looked out the window to see His Nation, the Raider Nation standing before him.

WE RESPECT YOU AL, REAL MEN WEAR BLACK!

Twice this week I've woken up to read about the death of an icon. First Steve Jobs and now Al Davis. I'm not over the death of Clarence Clemons, and now this? Both Jobs and Davis did things their own ways, the rest of the world be damned. Sometimes they were right, sometimes they were wrong, but they never bowed to others' opinions. People are saying reaction to the iPhone 4S is muted, people are disappointed, blah blah blah, and so far it's the best selling phone ever. Sometimes people pile on just for the sake of piling on. JaMarcus Russell was the biggest bust in history. Ping is a stupid add-on to iTunes. Whatever. I love my Apple toys and I love the Raider Nation. Loud and proud, baby. If I were on the Texans, I'd be worried about Sunday's game. The Raiders are going to bring it hard.

4 those on here and other places who kept saying I wish Al Davis would die so this team could become normal, FUCK OFF.

As life must live death must die.  I'm not one to dwell on death.  Everyone does go sooner or later.  I am glad Al Davis made it this far.  GOD only knew the true man and will judge him for it.

Does anyone know if Marc Davis has the same passion as Al for football and the raiders?  With the manager of the general partners gone, will the other partners fight for control?  Will Marc try to cash in and sell his share?

I do hope both the raiders players and houston players(if not all players this weekend) wear a black patch to honor the passing of a pro football legend

Hard to believe guys (and gals).  I just hope his boy and Amy take their time and get the right man for the job to continue the greatness of the Raiders.  After all...that's all Al would want...

Title: Al Davis died of heart failure, had throat surgery 3 days before his death
Post by: Randy on October 29, 2011, 02:36:21 AM
Former Raiders owner Al Davis died of heart failure
San Jose Mercury News

So the rumors I had been hearing for a couple years were true. Al was living at the Oakland Airport Hilton, where the Raiders stay the night before all the home games. I had heard from a couple of sources that he was living there because he wanted to be closer to the team, and it was easier for him getting in and out with no stairs.

Also, these articles confirm that he did also have skin cancer problems. I wonder if having surgery three days before he died had any relation to his death. Seems like quite a coincidence.

Greg Papa, traveling with the Raiders in Houston, received a phone call early this morning from the Raiders' John Herrera that he needed to come up to his room and speak with him. Greg Papa said he knew right away what it must be about. Listen to his story as he gets choked up telling it:

After two years at Fresno State ('76-'77), Coach Sweeney took to the NFL as an assistant coach for the Oakland Raiders in John Madden’s final season ('78), then one year with the St. Louis Cardinals under Bud Wilkinson. Sweeney was hired back at Fresno State following the 1979 season with the Cardinals, and remained a Bulldog until his retirement following the 1996 season.

Title: R.I.P. Coach Ken Olson - Father of Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Olson
Post by: Randy on September 06, 2014, 01:03:01 PM
With the optimism of the new football season upon us, I was sad to learn that longtime coach Ken Olson passed away Wednesday.

Olson was a longtime football assistant at Richland High School, and he built the Bombers softball program into a powerhouse in the 1980s and 1990s.

Two of Olsons sons followed in his footsteps as football coaches. Greg is the offensive coordinator of the Oakland Raiders, and Marc is a teacher and assistant at Richland High.

Ken was as much responsible for the Bomber football culture changing around here as Coach (J.D.) Covington, Richland football coach Mike Neidhold said. Ken was a great coach and even better person.

Services are pending.
