Back to downhill running for McFadden

Oakland Raiders: Back to downhill running for McFadden
 By Jerry McDonald
 jmcdonald@bayareanewsgroup.com

ALAMEDA -- Lateral movement has given way to full speed ahead when it comes to the Raiders running game.

As the Raiders concluded their three-day mandatory minicamp Thursday, so did an offseason of junking the zone running scheme in favor of the type of gap and power runs favored by former offensive coordinator and head coach Hue Jackson, and most notably, running back Darren McFadden.

"We were turning our shoulder to the sideline and running a lot last year, now we're keeping them square and going downhill,'' center Stefen Wisniewski said. ``You've got to change your footwork and that takes time. But we have more than enough time from April to September to adapt to some new run schemes.''

Darren McFadden of the Oakland Raiders rushes past Demorrio Williams of the San Diego Chargers Monday, Sept. 10, 2012 in Oakland. The Chargers won the game 22-14. (Anthony L. Solis/Santa Cruz Sentinel)
dedicates its first team session each day with a heavy emphasis on inside running, and the difference is striking. Instead of the stretch play runs where backs are asked to be patient before making one decisive cut upfield, McFadden, Rashad Jackson and Marcel Reece are taking handoffs as if coming out of starting blocks.

If this seems like a familiar storyline, it's because it happened in 2010 as well.

When Lane Kiffin was hired as the Raiders coach in 2008, he brought in zone blocking devotee Tom Cable to install the system. The Raiders running game improved, with Justin Fargas gaining 1,902 yards over 28 games in 2007 and 2008.

The system wasn't at all compatible with McFadden, who struggled with injuries but also with

the hesitation aspect of the scheme, looking nothing like the two-time Heisman Trophy runner-up he was at Arkansas.

Cable eventually became the head coach and play caller, but things didn't change until owner Al Davis hired Jackson to take over the offense. Jackson immediately changed up the blocking scheme to feature plays McFadden likes, and the result was a leap from 3.4 yards per carry in 2009 to 5.3 yards per carry in 20 games in 2010-11.

Left tackle Jared Veldheer said the switch is less dramatic in terms of learning because many of the linemen have done it before.

"Coach Cable had a lot of zone stuff, then when Hue was the offensive coordinator there was a lot of power stuff, and all that stuff has been with me during the shifts,'' Veldheer said. "Nothing's a totally new concept like I've never done it before, so that's kind of nice, being able to build off all that stuff. Then when you specialize in one thing you can really get good at it.''

The zone system isn't completely dead, but as McFadden noted, "for the most part, it's North-South. I feel like I'm a downhill runner and that's a lot of what we focus on, and it's something I'm looking forward to.''

-- Allen came away from the three-day camp feeling confident about the Raiders being a much improved team in 2013.

"I know there's a lot of experts out there that might thing differently, but I like this football team,'' Allen said.

--The list of players who didn't participate remained the same and included cornerback D.J. Hayden, return specialist Josh Cribbs, r unning back Latavius Murray, linebacker Travis Goethel and cornerback Phillip Adams, but Allen said he anticipated everyone being ready to go for training camp.

-- The Raiders won't meet as a team until they arrive at the Napa Marriott with July 24, with the first day of practice July 25 after a day of meetings.

-- Players and coaches went through an NFL mandated security meeting following practice.

-- Rather than concentrating on inside running plays in their first team session, the Raiders had a surprise on offense on the first snap as quarterback Matt Flynn play-faked to McFadden and threw a perfect 60-yard touchdown strike to Denarius Moore.

I think back to what Billie Bean did for the A's....& I relate it to what Reggie McKenzie is doing with our Oakland Raiders.  As long as we can decifer the players from the wins, we will win. But you have to have the correct mind set.
Exactly, Other franchises have turned it around, look at SF, and SEA. We just have a longer road to travel than they did. But travel it we must, and Reggie is doing a fantastic job pulling us along it.

A  few new beams, a lick of paint, and this Raider ship will be back in fighting trim, heading for sea lanes filled with blood, and treasure. 8) Oooooh yes.

Arrrrgh! Yessss, we must find thee treasure & Raid any ship in our way...arrrgh!!!

Thank you Amy for your decades of fine work and loyalty to our beloved team.  You will surely be missed.

Randy, loved the story about you and Greg seeing her and then calling to BLAST the mofo talking smack on the radio.  I love it!

In 2011, I drove out for the Raiders/Bills game in Buffalo.  My buddies and I hooked up with a Raiders tailagate in one of the lots.  About an hour and half before kick-off, some gentlemen came around with cameras, along with what I only supposed were members of the Raiders hierarchy.  I was kicking back just having a beer when out pops Amy Trask!  She asked me where I was from, was I having a good time, and thanked me for being a loyal Raiders fan.  It was amazing!  I couldn't believe it.  She walked around, talked to other fans and just mingled - she belonged there and instantly fit in.  Very cool and I will always remember it.

Thank you Amy and best of luck in your new endeavors.

When I was listening to the podcast, and Raider Greg told the tale of those worthless skinbags who dissed Amy Trask, my blood boiled.

Thanks Greg for setting those chumps straight.

We said hi to Amy Trask as we left Raiders HQ today - and then...

Raiders CEO Amy Trask informed Mark Davis & The Nation of her decision to resign Saturday:

 http://www.csnbayarea.com/raiders/raiders-ceo-amy-trask-resigns

Thank you for your COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE!!!

After Greg and I finished our rookie minicamp videotaping today in Alameda, we were pulling out of the parking lot in front of the building. I saw a woman and man walking from the building to their car. I said to Greg, "isn't that Amy Trask?" Greg said yes, and as we drove past her car as she was about to get in, Greg slowed down and from his convertible yelled, "HI AMY!"....and we both waved as she waved back.

We started heading to go get some lunch, when we heard on the radio just 2 or 3 minutes later, "Raiders CEO Amy Trask resigned this morning..."

We were shocked, and then.......one of the weekend radio hosts on 95.7 "The Game" threw in his personal comments about Amy resigning. He basically said something like, "well, what does a CEO for a football team do anyway? How much could they really miss her? What does she do besides sit around in her office..." or something like that.

Greg immediately got pissed and said, "CALL THE STATION!" I said, "really"? He said, "YES...RIGHT NOW! JUST PUNCH IN THE NUMBER AND HAND ME THE PHONE!" So I did. The call screener came on right away. Greg started saying something like, "your guy that on the radio right now just made some very offensive comments about Amy Trask that I take exception to.....she has done so much for the Raiders organization, from staightening out problems with the parking situation, to all the great work she has done with the fans, community outreach, etc, etc..." At that point the call screener interupted Greg and said, "that's good stuff....I'm gonna put you right on." Greg looked over at me and smiled, and said, "they're going to put me on." Within ten seconds Greg was on the air, talking to the guy who had made those comments. He repeated what he had told the screener, but went on and added more things about Amy and how valuable she has been to the Raiders, and how he doesn't appreciate how he belittled her position. At that point they cut off Greg's call. So we turned up the radio, which was on about a 15 second delay....and we heard the last 5 seconds or so of what Greg had said. Then the radio host who had made the comments started saying to his partner, "well......that's not really what I meant..." and then his partner comes back with, "hey, you sound like you're back-peddling now.....Raider Greg had you on the ropes buddy!"

I LOVE IT!

Too bad they don't archive all of the content of their broadcast. If they did I could have re-played Greg's call to them on our next podcast. Unfortunately they only archive interviews and not the whole show.

We are going to miss Amy. Among all the other things she did, she got us onto their media list....and we wouldn't have been at rookie mini-camp today if it hadn't been for her.

Thank you Amy. To us, you will always be, affectionately....."The Princess of Darkness"! (as Greg always called her...and told her so!) She asked him, "is it a good thing?" Greg said, "oh yes! it's a great thing!"

S.I.'s Peter King on the rebuilding of the Oakland Raiders

Raider fans: You want the good news or the bad news?

The bad: Oakland is missing two of its top five picks in this year's draft (the second- and fifth-rounders), leaving the team with just one choice in the top 65, and will have about $75 million to spend on the salary cap this year, a league low. That's because of approximately $48 million in dead money from the normal $123 million cap each team has. Some bad, bad contracts from the final days of Al Davis -- and the onerous decision to deal for and to pay big money to Carson Palmer in 2011 -- led to this mess.

The good: In 2014, Oakland will be in the best cap shape of any team -- or very close to it -- because GM Reggie McKenzie took his cap medicine in his first two years on the job. The Raiders will have approximately $50 million to spend in free agency and to extend the contracts of good players on their roster next year.

Think about an NFL team having $75 million to spend on players in a year. Washington has been grousing because of its $18million cap penalty in each of the last two years because the league ruled the team put too much dead money into the 2011 uncapped year. But Washington still has $105 million to spend this year -- $30 million more than McKenzie has to rebuild the 4-12 Raiders.

That figure, $75 million, was the cap number 10 years ago, in 2003.

McKenzie finds himself in one of the biggest Catch 22s ever in the NFL. He took the job knowing he had two years of cap hell to negotiate. Year one was ugly. Then he jettisoned the big-money quarterback, Palmer, in favor of the largely untested Matt "Two Career Starts'' Flynn. Year two could be uglier.

On Sunday, I asked McKenzie if he feared a lost season -- 3-13, or something on that order -- could cause owner Mark Davis to question the progress of the team, and maybe clean house.

"No, I don't fear that,'' he said. "You know what? I don't think along those lines. I just think of doing what's needed to make this team the best it can be long-term. That's my job. But fearful? No. Not at all. Mark knew the cap part of this was going to be a two-year deal. Mark is not his father. He is allowing me to do this, and we talk about the process all the time. He's allowing me to do the job that needs to be done.''

As one club executive told me, the Raiders will bear watching this year and next, as the lowest-growing team in the league. Some in the league think the Raiders would have less of a problem with spending $75 million on players this year than Oakland will have spending a load of cash it may struggle to scrape together next year, when McKenzie could open the checkbook to spend freely on free agents. Will Davis give McKenzie free reign to build the team as he sees fit?

"Yes, and we've talked about that,'' McKenzie said. "Remember -- the way I was raised in football, in Green Bay, was not as a big spender in free agency. I hope we continue to draft well, and I hope we can sign our own players, because that's the way I believe you win in this league. You draft, develop and sign your own players. Mark is on board with that, and what we have to do now and in the future, he's on board with and understands and he supports.''

This year, McKenzie badly wanted to keep bright defensive tackle Desmond Bryant, but the Browns, with scads of cap money available and a new owner dying to spend it, forked over $7 million a year to nab him. Could McKenzie have moved bodies around and mortgaged the future a bit with some contracts to do a deal with Bryant? Probably. But McKenzie made it clear Sunday that he wanted the Raiders out of cap jail right now, and he wanted to be sure they'd never be back in it again on his watch.

"But as far as taking our bruises now, I do want you to know we're in this to win this year,'' McKenzie said. "We will compete. This is not a throw-in-the-towel deal.''

I like that the Raiders dealt for Flynn. McKenzie knew Palmer, long-term, wasn't going to be the quarterback, because he wasn't going to commit franchise-quarterback money to Palmer annually. So for half the cash, McKenzie dealt for Flynn. McKenzie doesn't know if Flynn will be his quarterback of the future. In fact, the odds are against a seventh-round passer being someone's franchise quarterback. That's why McKenzie won't rule out taking a quarterback with the third pick in the draft. He won't rule out taking any position there. "Matt could turn out to be the guy, and if he does, so be it,'' McKenzie said.

This is why it's essential for Raider fans -- at least in my mind -- to have a forgiving nature this year. This isn't the year they're going to win. This is the year they put up building blocks for the future. If you say, "I've been patient long enough, I want results.'' Well, don't. Or don't put the blame for the 2013 performance on McKenzie if it's substandard.

The level of incompetence in the draft room by the Raiders is stunning. Over the past nine years they're the only team to not draft a Pro Bowl player in the first round. The year-by-year futility in drafting:

2004 -- Drafted tackle Robert Gallery second overall. Couldn't hack tackle. Became a decent guard. Now out of football.

2005 -- Drafted cornerback Fabian Washington 23rd overall. Now out of football.

2006 -- Drafted safety Michael Huff seventh overall. Just left for Baltimore as an unrestricted free agent.

2007 -- Drafted quarterback JaMarcus Russell first overall. Russell and Ryan Leaf are the biggest quarterback busts in NFL history. Now out of football.

2008 -- Drafted running back Darren McFadden fourth overall. When healthy, he's a very good back, but he's missed 23 games due to injury in five years. Enters the season as the Raiders' prospective starting back.

2009 -- Drafted wideout Darrius Heyward-Bey seventh overall. Just left for a modest free-agent deal in Indianapolis.

2010 -- Drafted linebacker Rolando McClain eighth overall. Two arrests, one team suspension and three in-and-out seasons later, he was released by McKenzie last week.

2011 -- Al Davis used the first-round pick in a trade the previous year for defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who was cut by McKenzie in a cost-cutting move last month.

2012 -- Former coach Hue Jackson used the first-round pick in a trade the previous year for Palmer, who was traded by McKenzie to Arizona in a cost-cutting move last week.

Nine first-round picks in the last nine years, and the Raiders have just one of the players used with the nine picks on the roster today. That is all-time incompetence. McKenzie is here to clean up the mess. It's categorically unfair to judge the job he's doing until at least the end of the 2014 season.

McKenzie’s still a year away from rebuilding Raiders

McKenzie’s still a year away from rebuilding Raiders
ProFootballTalk.com

The Raiders have $45 Million in "dead money" towards this year's salary cap. That’s more than a third of this year’s salary cap for players no longer there to “help.”

Once McKenzie’s actually able to do his job, he might be able to build something. After clearing the books this year, the Raiders are expected to have around $50 million in salary cap space (for 2014).

And if he’s judged before he’s able to use it, the organizational problems in Oakland might be too big for anyone to overcome.

Cutting Palmer would save the Raiders $6 million against the cap for 2013, he would still count as $9 million in dead money.

We need a qb......palmer will be gone I am assuming.........PRYOR SUCKS......AT LEAST WHAT I HAVE SEEN....let him play this season and see what he can do.......If he sucks (like I think he does) then we should draft one next year......we need a franchise qb...one we can keep for the next 10-15 years.....I like this DT in the draft......lets get him....

Yep........Thats the plan... We will get a top 10 pick at the least and we will have cap room.....Better QB choice next year.. and we need to build a D....THIS YEAR

We need a linebacker.  Brian Urlacher is available.  What is the problem?

I'll second that.  And we have the dough too.  Sign Urlacher & grab Jarvis Jones with the 3rd pick (unless Floyd is available) and let's go.

HELL....THEY HAVE NO PLAYERS....WHO GIVES A SHIT SHIT WHAT D THEY RUN.....IT BETTER BE DAM GOOD! WE ALL WILL BE CALLING FOR ALLENS ASS IF THIS D IS NOT IMPROVED.... OH RIGHT....HE IS  "ONLY" A SECOND YEAR COACH...AND...."THOSE" WERENT HIS GUYS..... OH AND THESE GUYS NEED TIME TO ADJUST TO THE NEW SCEME.... LETS SEE.... WITH ALL THE EXCUSES..... ALLEN MIGHT BE HERE FOR 10 YEARS....WHAT A BUNCH OF BOOWLSHIT!

I'm not sure if it would have been a good idea to resign the players we've lost at the free agent prices it would have cost. Were they really THAT good? Even if we wanted to, how could we have done it? We were only 3 or 4 Million under the cap before we lost those guys.

Raiders' Intentions May Soon be Revealed

Restructured deals, negotiations with own free agents in coming days will provide clues to GM McKenzie's offseason plans

http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/sports/Raiders-Intentions-May-Soon-be-Revealed-196310551.html

I often get worked up with this team but after reading this article it is somewhat calming.  We forget what an absolute MESS of a cap situation this team had and still has due to Al's contracts.   I read the other day that Cincinnati is like 50-something million UNDER the cap.  Now, their owner is a notoriously cheap mofo but look at the nice young talent they have built up the past years by drafting well.  I hope we will get it together and build this team, while keep some core players that we already have.

McKenzie already thinking about re-signing McFadden
Vic Tafur, SF Chronicle

McKenzie agrees with McFadden that the running back’s injuries are flukey. “He is as tough as they come,” McKenzie told PFT. “Those things happen.”
