Jason Tarver Named Raiders Defensive Coordinator
« Reply #586 on: February 06, 2012, 03:13:24 PM »
37 year old Jason Tarver Named Raiders Defensive Coordinator

and Greg...he's "cerebral" !

He's got a master's degree in biochemistry and molecular biology, but decided to become a coach rather than enter medical school. He'd even considered a career as an orthopedic surgeon, but chose football. Why? He was asked the question numerous times, by some of the greatest in the NFL , including the late Bill Walsh and San Francisco's former head coach, Steve Mariucci.

Last fall, the San Francisco Chronicle talked to him about his career, and Tarver discussed the parallel between football and molecular biology, remarking, "The process - making the complex seem simple so that you can execute it. In research, you apply the rules you know to reactions and try something new. It's the same thing when you teach a guy how to run a blitz. He may deal with something new, but as long as he starts the process correctly, then you deal with what happens."

Tarver added, " I really love the look on guys' faces when you help them make a play. It's almost better than doing it yourself. That's what really made me want to do this."

This article is flawed....it says we have only 2 positions left to fill (DC & TE Coach)...

I thought these were still open as well:

ST - Steve Hoffman from KC, is this confirmed though?
QB Coach
D Line
DB Coach

So here's a question RNPers - if you could decide, who would you hire as our next Defensive Coordinator?

Figured we can't do shit anyway so at least have fun with it.

As for me, I would go with Perry Fewell of the Giants.

oh that's great news....like we need a Bolt cast off. And who thinks Knapp didn't have a lot to do with the OL coach hire? I mean really... that dude has always been an assistant. At least they are keeping Wiz. But back to the zone block.  So any word on who we are interviewing for DC?
I hope it's not goddamn Dan Reeves! (I hate that bastard!) When "the Menace" mentioned him as a mentor I almost fucking cried...but there's no crying in football. Otherwise, I like what he had to say.Let's just see what happens. At least Dennis the Menace already has a nickname...it took Chucky awhile to earn his.

Ahhh another of Allen's Atlanta Falcon cronies.....nice...and Reggie in GB...nice double cronie

Its a new era Raider Nation and you better get used to it, or get lost. I believe this coming season will be the most exciting one in the last 9 years! I can't wait to see how this teams becomes a monster out there and destroys their opponents!

Well I hope to god not..................he was the 49ers coordinator from 07-10 and then the Chargers coordinator this past season......................niners were awful and the Chargers were not very good this year on D.........I dont know about you all but I certainly hope we dont pick this guy.................It blows my mind that we finally have the ability to pick phenomenal talent now that AL is gone and we pick this crap........................freaking terrible!

Sorry Hellraider but you're wrong buddy.

Taking that diss at Al Davis being a failure at a talent evaluator. Sure he has had his fair share of bad picks in the 1st round but rounds 2 thru 7 Al has always struck gold on his picks.

If you really think Reggie McKenzie is going to be some gifted scout your in for a big shock. Green Bay team sucks... The reason why they've been competitive is they've had 2 QB that will be heading to the hall of fame that have carried the franchise for the last 15 years.

Al Davis scout skills >>> Reggie McKenzie scout skills
I'm talkin about hiring these coaches........we were not able to get great coaches because of al......I wasn't talking about picking players....

Just read that Wisniewski is being retained as Asst. Line Coach.

Also, the hiring of Al Miller as the Strength & Conditioning seems like a great hire.  Maybe he can keep the sand out of McFadden's vagina  ;)

Per Steve Corkran the Raiders are seeking permission to interview Packers DB coach Joe Whitt for the DC job. Wonder if permission will be denied? Wonder if we care?

Well, I hope it's not denied.  I would like a thorough interview process for the DC position.  If we are interviewing DB coaches, let's get Ed Donatell of the 49ers in here.

With Frank Pollack now the new OL coach (was assistant OL coach in Houston) all times now point to us moving back to a zone block scheme. I hope they decide to keep Wiz as an assistant, if not he's surely going to join the 49ers staff.

Rod Woodson is getting interest from the Bengals.......

LET ME SAY THIS...... WE HAVE A NEW COACHING STAFF AND WE WILL WIN OR LOSE BASED ON THESE CHOICES.... I BELIEVE NOW THE THE SHOCK IS OVER WE NEED TO GET BEHIND OUR NEW STAFF AS MUCH AS WE DO THE PLAYERS AND WAIT AND SEE HOW IT PANS OUT........ THERE ARE SO MANY REASONS THAT KNAPP FAILED AND WHO WOULD HAVE DONE BETTER GIVEN THIS ....... "NO ONE!" WE NEED TO GIVE THIS STAFF A CHANCE AND SEE...... YOU GUYS KNOW THAT IM THE FIRST TO FLIP OUT!!!!! WELL ..... IM CONCERNED BUT NOT "FLIPPED OUT" BECAUSE WE HAVENT SEE ANYTHING TO TELL ME ONE WAY OR THE OTHER....... I FOR ONE WILL TAKE A WAIT AND SEE ATTITUDE BUT IT SURE IS HARD TO SWALLOW....... THIS I CAN SAY.... 8)

With you all the way on that. I mean from what we heard Allen is very smart so i cant see him making dumb blind desicions. He has to have some good reason why he is choosing this staff especially since he is choosing them so fast even with all the candidates out there. This staffs first judging from fans and critics will be based off of what they do and how hard they push in the draft and free agency. We need to see some good smart moves in keeping players (bush) and releasing some (barnes).

I'm not bitching to prove I'm right or wrong...I'm bitching cause like everyone has said.... We finally get the freedom for the first time in 50 years! ...to be able to hire and fire anyone they want freely! And this is the guy they choose? It's like having a choice to buy any car in the world you want...and you choose a fucking ford pinto! I mean real teams with buying power and realistic championship aspirations would get proven guys that make sense....that's why the minute we hired Allen I knew what direction were heading....it's not rebuilding its simply a RM experiment   Like he said in his presser...."were measured by wins and losses....if we win it was a good hire....if we lose not so good" really? No fucking shit! To me I would of said from the beginning of being hired as GM that every move will be intended to win now! Not we will Championships.... someday! So Gregg put to a Knapp is going to win Championships long term?.... Really?.... WTF has he done that would scream success? Let me you tell you the real reason why they hired Gregg Knapp....He's the only guy who will sit down and shut up and not try and take over the team, face it Allen cant hire elite coordinators now cause they would be older more experience and he would lose the teams respect if a coordinator has more pull then him! This is the biggest concern with Allen....will he keep the team interested? I mean he's 39 and has done nothing!  These are on the AVG 25 year olds! We have a young team in a generation that is very selfish.... Being a dictator/discipline coach at this stage is gambling!  If we hired a proven HC he automatically demand respect....but a coach coming in after 5 of 6 in the last 6 years ....players know ....Not For Long!.... So why bother fighting for someone that they know is expendable in 2 years!  I do not like this pattern were going down...oh yeah in the presser for those who still think Allen won't build this team in Denver's image....listen to the presser Allen clearly says he's mentor and resource to lean on for football knowledge is DAN REEVES! For those who don't know who that is....he was the Denver Broncos HC that lead them to 3 SB loses in the 80's he's considered a Denver legend! .....And this is where our HC will run for answers?.... A guy who played us twice a year for over a decade! Dude hates the Raiders!  He equal to Marty Schottenheimer .....Sad road were going down RM better show off his player personell skills and get good players or I'll be watching them on my flat screen!

Re: Knapp
« Reply #556 on: February 01, 2012, 07:56:00 AM »
OK, since this is a done deal and complaining won't do anything, I'll  offer some positives as well.  Knapp's previous term with the Raiders is no measure of his capabilities. When Knapp was here he had a bad team and awful QBing - JaWalrus, McCown, Andrew Walter, Culpepper.

For what it's worth, there were plenty of times in 2011 when Jackson's playcalling was unimaginative and ineffective. So I'm not sure what Jackson, Saunders, etc, bring to the table that Knapp can't.

When he was here, the leading receiver was freakin' Johnnie Lee Higgins.  Face it, we had bad personnel.  But, we averaged over 100 yards a game rushing - and that was with primarily Fargas (loved that guy).

What I am saying is, in an Al Davis run team, the OC is merely an assistant - the HEAD COACH calls the plays - Cable did it as well as Hue.  The OC simply suggests plays and the HC chooses them.  I am hoping that that Knapp will have the freedom to call his own plays within the scheme of what the HC wants - an explosive offense that relies primarily on running the football.

Something I ran across in this article.....although Knapp was with the Raiders for the entire '07 and '08 seasons, he only had play calling duties for about half a season. People remember that our play calling wasn't great for those two years, but that was mostly Kiffin's and Cable's play calling. Check out this quote from the article:

"Hired by Lane Kiffin by Oakland in 2007, Knapp did not call plays with the Raiders until Kiffin was fired four games into his second season, and later in the season was replaced by head coach Tom Cable as the play-caller as the Oakland offense struggled with JaMarcus Russell at quarterback."

http://www.mercurynews.com/raiders/ci_19859146

But what did he do AFTER he left Oakland? Bounced around the league for 4 years! What did he achieve nothing!  In Houston they have the best WR Andre Johnson and RB Adrian Foster! Plus a elite Defense and still didn't do win shit!  I don't like any of these hires but if I choose to watch my team I'll be forced to accept these clowns and watch them fail again....I hope I'm dead wrong!
GOT TO AGREE WITH YA MIKE..... BAD HIRE IN MY EYES..... GREG "TAKE A DIRT" KNAPP...... ALL I CAN THINK OF IS THE SEASONS OF 07 AND 08...... EASY TO FORGET BECAUSE OUR OFFENSE "SUCKED" HUGE..... THIS ONE IS A QUESTION..... I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT KNAPP IS THE BEST OC WE COULD FIND OUT OF ALL 32 TEAMS AND their ASSISTANTS...... I WILL BE WATCHING VERY CLOSELY TO THE DC..... THIS WILL TELL US ALL WHERE WE ARE GOING..... SO FAR IT'S LOOKING LIKE IT'S BACKWARDS...... AND THINGS WERE LOOKING SO GOOD UNTIL THIS..... UGGGGGGGGGGG

In other news...Fassel leaving to St. Louis...see ya...time to go dude...don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.

Umm that saying don't let the door hit ya is saved for people you don't care to see leave.

I certainly thought Fassel was a great ST coach. The only issue I had with his schemes was the punt/kick returns that he allowed... but that's more of a Bresnahan issue for not teaching these meatheads not to tackle.

But just think of how many times Fassell one us games.

I can remember big special teams plays
@ HOU
vs BROWNS
@ KC (Stupid play clock)

Fassell in my opinion was a great ST coach.

Not me.  I disagree.  Lechler & Jano made ST shine.  I have seen far too many big plays given up by special teams, huge returns in games that were close...I was at 2 of 'em Jacksonville last year and Buffalo this year.  Shitty tackling and alligator arms prevalent on our guys too much...

No problem bro.. I can understand why your pissed. For the record I was at the Broncos game in the Coliseum and saw that fuccker eric decker return a punt for a td that ended up being a game leading td for the broncos.

Yesterday Allen sold me, but with Knapp as our OC, not so sure now...might as well keep that old fossil Al Saunders then...some buffoonery still hanging around in Alameda... ::)

We can now only pray that 1. Coach Allen can get this defense to actually keep us in games now rather than lose them for us and 2. that Greg "sorry i was taking a" Knap has something to prove knowing he blew it the first time and is wanting to show he can run an offense. Really wish we could have just Kept Saunders and let him and Carson run the play calling to keep some stability. Oh well.....

I'll go against to norm and offer something positive...

1) Knapp is a good OC and his offensives have been at the top in rushing offenses.
2) Allen needs someone he trusts to run the offense (Allen indicated he will not be calling offensive plays) and they have a past working relationship in their days in ATL.
3) Knapp is familiar with our personal on offense and can assume he'll create situations for them to succeed.
4) Knapp now has Palmer vs JaMarcus (enough said).
5) Is this a signal that the resigning of Bush becomes ever more important? I believe so.
6) Knapp has not been working at a bed & breakfast since his last time as OC.

Question yet to be answered is does this mean we go back to a zone blocking concept?

Knapp and Allen worked together in Atlanta
« Reply #544 on: January 31, 2012, 12:47:14 PM »
I am hearing that Greg Knapp was offered the Offensive Coordinator job.............................WELL LET ME SAY THAT THIS IS CERTAINLY OFFENSIVE TO ME................HEY LETS DO EVERYTHING TWICE..............SHELL 2 TIMES.......BRESNAHAN 2 TIMES........AND NOW MAYBE KNAPP 2 TIMES.................THESE ALL WORKED OUT FOR THE GOOD THE 2ND TIME AROUND.................GREAT JOB.................NOW ALL THAT IS LEFT IS TO MOVE TO LA FOR THE SECOND TIME AND WATCH IT FAIL.........................WHAT A JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I kind of had the same reaction as you when I saw the headline. I thought, "if Allen is hiring his own staff, why bring in an ex-Al Davis guy? But then I found out Knapp worked with Allen in Atlanta as OC there. Plus, I was reminded that when Knapp was our offensive coordinator in '07-'08, he had JaMarcus "Purple Drank" Russell to work with. Also, Knapp's last offense, with the Texans, were pretty successful the last few years.

ProFootballTalk.com says, "Knapp, 48, is one of the NFL’s most running game-oriented offensive minds...the Texans finished the 2011 regular season tied for the NFL lead in rushing attempts...The hire would seem to make the Raiders even more likely to use the franchise tag on free agent running back Michael Bush."

Houston layed a few losses on us the last few years. Maybe he'll be ok. On the other hand, cleaning house and starting fresh did have a certain appeal to it.

I for one am optimistic with this new coach, He said some good things.

1. He isn’t going to call the defensive plays, he believes that the defensive coach should call his owns plays. But he will be involved in every aspect of the game.

When is the last time this has happened. Hue called the offense, Cable Called the offense, Norv called the offense, shit brain Kiffen called the offense. Ok, Art Shell didn’t call the offense but really.....

It looks like we have a HEAD coach not a coach that is going to be stuck on one side of the ball.

2. He is going to evaluate the the entire team, not just run a system that he wants to run, he’s not necessarily tied to the 4-3 or 3-4 but is going to evaluate the team and run what fits the defense players he has.

I like this, that’s what needs to happen. You cannot have a team plays schemes it doesn’t have the personnel to run.

I could go on, needless to say i’m on board.

It will take time. I am not expecting to go to the Super Bowl next year
Dennis Allen thinks he has the players to win next year. I know he has to say stuff like that to get his players on his side.
But it’s not going to be easy. A lot of these players have seen a lot of coaches come and go and have heard a lot of speeches and direction.

The staff he chooses will be the biggest factor

Go Raiders
