Despite all the lore of the Raiders being a dirty team, Al wouldn't have paid bounties for taking out players. He expected you to take out players as part of your regular salary. Take out some big players and your next contract might be bigger, but there wouldn't be a specific bonus tied to taking someone out. Al was too smart re: the rules, and too much of a bad ass to expect his players to anything less than hit people as hard as they could.

So in that sense the fact that the Saints had to pay people extra to get them to hit Favre or Warner harder is kind of sad. Weren't their players already motivated enough?

It makes sense. A lot of sense, especially when you throw in the continuity factor.

Because remember, it was Saunders who actually devised each and every gameplan last season. Hue Jackson then used it like a menu, picking and choosing from it the actual plays to call on gameday. Plus, Saunders was the de facto quarterback coach. So he knows firsthand how much Carson Palmer could absorb in being flipped, so to speak, from a Darryl Lamonica mad bomber-type into a Rich Gannon accurate dink and dunker-type, and just where Terrelle Pryor is on the developmental scale.

Consider: Oakland was ninth in the NFL in total offense (379.5 yards per game), seventh in rushing offense (131.9), 11th in passing (247.6) and was tied for fifth in completions of 40 or more yards (14) and tied for seventh in rushing TDs (16).

Imagine what Saunders can do with an entire offseason "advising" Knapp and reported new QB coach John DeFilippo and new receivers coach Ted Gilmore on how to best use so many weapons...so many healthy weapons."

What im really most pissed off about on Offense is the talk of us transitioning to the WCO. Granted the WCO worked out well for us once previously (Gruden era) I dont know how good its goinf to be this time around. We wont have the MVP QB (Gannon) throwing to the 2 greatest WR's in the history of the game (RICE & BROWN)... I understand its a dink and dunk offense. But Al Davis philosphy has always been the vertical game. McKenzie/Allen are spitting on Al Davis grave for even contemplating this idea.

Plus there is no greater specticle as a fan then watching a QB take his shots down field. get ready my friends for Carson Palmer to look like Alex Smith.. If we completely ignore the vertical game then I'm turning up Alamaeda with a ski mask & meat cleaver.

Shame to see such negative thoughts through this forum.

We've spent the last 9 years working to the Al Davis single season championship plan and for 9 years we have failed miserably.  All the comments I'm reading look like everyone is expecting the new guy to come in and win us a superbowl this year !!!? Did you all really think that was likely?

I wouldn't put your hopes on the play-offs this year or even next, but I would expect to see disciplin and consistency over the next couple of years. Building a team that that not only wins one championship and then fades away but becomes dominant.

I know we have all waited 9 years for change and we are all desperate to get back to winning but be patient and give these guys a chance.

For God's sake, let the man work and at least see what he has to offer before you start tearing him a new one!

I'm with you Essex Raider. I'm tired of waiting to get back to the playoffs like everyone else, but I think a reorganization was in order, and like you...... I like the young, new staff that could be here together for a long time. Obviously if they aren't successful and we end up with a whole new regime in a couple of years......well......I don't even want to THINK of that possibility. But for right now, I'm going to be optimistic and enjoy what could be a new "golden age" for the Raiders. (Please!)

I'm with you Essex Raider. I'm tired of waiting to get back to the playoffs like everyone else, but I think a reorganization was in order, and like you...... I like the young, new staff that could be here together for a long time. Obviously if they aren't successful and we end up with a whole new regime in a couple of years......well......I don't even want to THINK of that possibility. But for right now, I'm going to be optimistic and enjoy what could be a new "golden age" for the Raiders. (Please!)

So what happens when we go 5-11 or 6-10 next year you feel the same way? Knowing the squad you have now ...is easily a 8 win team maybe better! ...if u recall we did try rebuilding the right way already...makes me sick people forget that.... So you're telling me...that hiring Kiffin (Rookie: college coach) the youngest coach in NFL history and drafting a raw worthless QB (jbusto) with hopes and dreams he delivers a SB .....but turned out he delivered a pile of shit!... We drafted and rebuilt with a franchise RB in DMC ....drafted what Al was hoping was a franchise WR in DHB...these moves in no way shape or form fall into the category...of what Essex Raider is saying "that the last 9 years were built for 1 year championships" is bullshit and insulting after 7 straight 11 loss seasons (NFL Record) ... Now I'd say  the last 3 years we built adding on to what we thought would be a good team and arguably we could have won 10 games the last 2 seasons..........So to say sit down and shut up and wait 2 years...is over the top for this Raider fan.... We've rebuilt twice in the last 9 years now we're going for a 3rd?.... This time I will NOT give any slack in fact they better fucking show me something or I'll continue to publicly slam them! ....The days of the 3 year plan are over!... Look at teams like ARI, DET, CIN, or hell even BAL sucked then got Flacco and been a contender since, all teams that use to suck then in one or two years they contend! ....What I am saying is modern day teams gel much faster then the old days...good teams that is...coached well....we got a raw GM and HC that are in way over their heads and too Me if Allen can't win at least 8 games he doesn't make it to year 2 ....or it'll be a long 3 year stretch of moving backwards....or sideways...we were literally plays away from really moving forward and taking the next step....blowing up this team and starting over would be stupid!.... They should add on and tweak the roster a little and coach some games....maybe we can pick up right where we left off...but we won't probably cause were the Raiders.

We've spent the last 9 years working to the Al Davis single season championship plan and for 9 years we have failed miserably.  All the comments I'm reading look like everyone is expecting the new guy to come in and win us a superbowl this year !!!? Did you all really think that was likely?

I wouldn't put your hopes on the play-offs this year or even next, but I would expect to see disciplin and consistency over the next couple of years. Building a team that that not only wins one championship and then fades away but becomes dominant.

I know we have all waited 9 years for change and we are all desperate to get back to winning but be patient and give these guys a chance.

For God's sake, let the man work and at least see what he has to offer before you start tearing him a new one!

is that like where vetran players wake up one day. Go to training & are suddenly in awe & buy into a 6 foot 180 pound 40 yr old rookie head coach? Oh yeah because Dennis Allen demands respect.

sSorry for oozing sarcasm.. But This Raider team has seen a lot of Coaches & Co-Ordinators over the last 9 years & this is by far the greenest staff assembled (Green is todays buzz word for out of there depth)

Its going to be a long training camp & I'm sure the youth of Dennis Allen is going to rub a vetran the wrong way (Why? Because Dennis Allen is going to want to show who's boss)

This team can come flat out the gates & Dennis Allen will be the next Raheem Morris. Vetran players will shut this kid out if we lose & there's nothing he can do. We can only hope that we win & win early so the playing group buys into Dennis Allen.

37 year old Jason Tarver Named Raiders Defensive Coordinator

He's got a master's degree in biochemistry and molecular biology, but decided to become a coach rather than enter medical school. He'd even considered a career as an orthopedic surgeon, but chose football. Why? He was asked the question numerous times, by some of the greatest in the NFL , including the late Bill Walsh and San Francisco's former head coach, Steve Mariucci.

Last fall, the San Francisco Chronicle talked to him about his career, and Tarver discussed the parallel between football and molecular biology, remarking, "The process - making the complex seem simple so that you can execute it. In research, you apply the rules you know to reactions and try something new. It's the same thing when you teach a guy how to run a blitz. He may deal with something new, but as long as he starts the process correctly, then you deal with what happens."

Tarver added, " I really love the look on guys' faces when you help them make a play. It's almost better than doing it yourself. That's what really made me want to do this."
