Segment #3: The Oakland Raiders, 2014's "Cinderella Team" of the NFL?

Raider Greg makes a bold prediction: The Oakland Raiders will prove to be 2014's "Cinderella Team" of the NFL. Mainstream media is ranking the Raiders as the #32 team in the power rankings. They are ranking head coach Dennis Allen as the 32nd best head coach in the NFL. Raider Greg points out that the Raiders coaching staff has been together for a few years now and the players have had time to digest the playbook. The Raiders have a lot of veteran players with huge chips on their shoulders after being under appreciated by their former teams. The Raiders team as a whole have a lot to prove, after hearing so many negative comments concerning expectations for the Raiders in 2014. Rolando McClain was recently picked up by the Dallas Cowboys, after saying not that long ago that he did not wish to play football anymore. We hear an interview Raider Greg did with Miles during his first year with the Raiders in 2012, plus an interview with Miles' mother Donna.

Segment #5: The Media is reaching for stories during this dead time of the season

Enough of the “best teams ever, best quarterback ever, Top 10 receivers, Top 10 RBs, Top 100 Players of all time” etc, etc. How may Oakland Raiders players are on these lists? We can’t wait until training camp starts, because NFL news right now is weak.

Segment #2: “How has the Raiders' defensive backfield improved?"

Inspired by an article in "Just Blog Baby", Raider Greg goes over some defensive stats and concludes that our defensive backfield has greatly improved.

Segment #3: “Do we want the Raiders on HBO's Hard Knocks?"

The Raiders are one of a few teams who could be forced by the NFL to do HBO's Hard Knocks program. Several teams have apparently volunteered to be featured, but could the NFL force a team who doesn't want to do the show even though they have volunteers?

Segment #4: News and lies in the media as the draft approaches

This year's draft being two weeks later than usual is causing pre-draft news to seem never-ending. The draft can't get here any too soon.

Segment #3: “Lies, Lies, Lies"

Don't believe what NFL teams, their GMs, and player's agents are saying this time of year. Johnny Manzeil just visited the Raiders in Alameda. Are they really interested in drafting him, or is their interest a smoke screen to hide their true interests?

Segment #4: Are the Raiders finished in Free Agency 2014? Should they be?

Raider Greg does not think Reggie and the Raiders are finished picking up free agents. Chris Johnson is available. Would you like to see him in the backfield with Maurice Jones-Drew and Darren McFadden?

Segment #1: "UK Black Hole Prepares for Raiders in London in 2014"

Raider Greg shares information on game ticket availability for the Raiders game vs the Dolphins at Wembley in late September.

Segment #2: "Oakland Raiders free agent signings - so far"

We haven't seen much in the way of the Raiders locking up their own free agents to new contracts prior to the start of free agency. Taiwan Jones and Khalif Barnes are the two recent signings. Lamarr Houston and Jared Veldheer are yet to be sign new contracts. Will they enter free agency?  What are the Raiders needs, and what will Reggie McKenzie do in free agency to fill those needs? We hear from Taiwan Jones in a recent interview on the Raiders flagship station 95.7 "The Game" on his recent contract signing. We also hear a clip from Jared Veldheer.

Segment #3: "Mark Davis speaks out on the Raiders stadium situation in Oakland"

Mark Davis was asked at the combine how the Raiders stadium situation is progressing. He expressed disappointment with the lack of progress, and basically said that this is the City of Oakland's last chance to keep the Raiders in Oakland. Will "Coliseum City" become a reality? Will the Raiders move? What are the possibilities?

Segment #4: "A look back at the recent NFL combine and look forward to the May NFL Draft"

We review the performance of the quarterbacks and other players at the recent NFL combine. We hear some interviews from draft experts and former players who spoke on 95.7 "The Game", including Raiders great Fred Biletnikoff, Joe Theismann, former NFL personnel man now with ESPN Louis Riddick, and Raiders beat writer Vic Tafur of the SF Chronicle. Raider Nation Podcast #401 Online: "What Should The Raiders Do in Free Agency?"
« Reply #225 on: February 07, 2014, 12:26:16 PM »

TOPICS:

Segment #1: "Ray Guy Inducted Into Pro Football Hall of Fame"

Ray Guy is finally inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The first punter to make it in. Raider Greg talks about Ray's outstanding career and his induction.

Segment #2: "Not enough urgency in signing Veldheer and Houston?"

We hear Jerod Veldheer from an interview on Raiders flagship station 95.7 "The Game", where he expresses his feelings that there isn't enough urgency on the Raiders' side in signing him to a long-term contract. Reggie McKenzie made a statement to the media during their recent roundtable that Veldheer and Houston are two of the players that he wants to sign to long-term contracts, but nothing has been done yet. In this 95.7 interview Greg Papa gives his opinion on the subject.

Segment #3: "Raiders complete their 2014 coaching staff with 4 new assistants"

The Raiders rounded out their 2014 coaching staff with the hire of four new assistants. Joe Woods was named secondary coach. Marcus Robertson was hired as his assistant. Chris Boniol was named assistant special teams coach, and Marcus Robertson was named assistant strength and conditioning coach. Raider Greg isn't impressed with the names and backgrounds. We hear from former Raiders player Sam Adams from an interview on 95.7 "The Game", where he surprises the hosts when he tells them he was Dennis Allen's roommate in college. Sam says he has faith that Dennis Allen will "get it done" in Oakland.

Segment #4: "Free Agency is approaching - who should the Raiders pick up? Who should they resign?"

What will Reggie McKenzie do in free agency? We have around $60 Million in free cap space. Should we use it to resign existing players? Who should we not retain? Who should we go after? We hear from Raiders insider Paul Gutierrez from an interview on 95.7 "The Game" where he gives his thoughts. Raider Greg gives his thoughts also.

Segment #5: "A look ahead to the 2014 NFL Draft"

The Raiders have the #5 pick in the first round of the draft. Who will still be on the board? Should they pick in that spot or trade down for more picks? Should they move up for a chance at a top QB? What do you think?

Segment #6: “The Boneline” Voicemail Segment

TOPICS:

Segment #1: "Thanks to our Raider Nation Podcast Listeners"

Thanks to all of you guys for the support you've given us over nine seasons of Raider Nation Podcast. Despite the nine years without a winning season, you have all kept us going and made it a pleasure for us to put out these shows. We treasure the friendships we've made and people we've met in Oakland and in traveling the country for Raiders away games. Thanks for everything.

Segment #2: "Dennis Allen, he's a keeper!"

Mark Davis met with Reggie McKenzie and Dennis Allen recently, and the partnership will remain intact, at least for the 2014 season. This has received mixed opinions among Raider Nation.

Segment #3: "The Deconstruction - Reconstruction of the Oakland Raiders"

Raider Greg gives his thoughts on deconstruction and reconstruction. Could they have been done simultaneously?

Segment #4: "A look back at Nine Seasons of the Oakland Raiders and how the Raider Nation Podcast covered it"

We revisit key moments in Raiders history over our nine seasons of doing the podcast, and share clips of the shows we did along the way. It's a little long (it caused this show to shatter our all-time record for show length, over 3 hours!), so we hope you enjoy it.

Raider Nation Podcast #377 Online: "A New Raiders Stadium In Oakland?"
« Reply #204 on: July 17, 2013, 01:01:06 PM »

TOPICS:

Segment #1: "Raiders looking into a new 56,500 seat stadium in Oakland"

The Raiders and the City of Oakland are studying the feasibility of building a new stadium on the current site in Oakland that would have 56,500 seats. The Raiders say they could contribute $300 Million towards the estimated $800 Million project. If the NFL gave them a $200 Million loan as they did for the 49ers, this would leave $300 Million. They estimate $100 Million could be gathered via personal seat licenses. This still leaves $200 Million, and the city and county still owe $100 Million from the previous coliseum renovations in 1995.

Segment #2: "Oakland Raiders ranked #32 in the PFT Pre-season Power Rankings"

Raider Greg says, "the Pre-Season Power Rankings….what in the hell is THAT?" He gives you his feelings on the Raiders being ranked #32, and predicts that they will NOT pick first in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Segment #3: "What if Aaron Hernandez had been a Raider and not a Patriot?"

Would the public and the media have reacted differently if an Oakland Raider had been arrested for murder instead of a New England Patriot? Raider Greg tell you what he thinks.

As we left Raiders rookie mini-camp last Saturday, we saw Amy Trask walking out of the front door of Raiders headquarters to her car. We called out, "hi Amy!" and waved. She waved back. The Raiders began "phase one" of the offseason player schedule. Voluntary workouts at the Raiders Alameda facility, and team meetings in the classrooms. We hear the media sessions with Stefan Wisniewski and Jacoby Ford, then Raider Greg gives his input on the new Raiders.

Segment #3: "No Pass on Lazy Ass"

Free passes are over in Oakland as Reggie McKenzie works on changing the culture of the Oakland Raiders. Sports Illustrated did a feature on this in their latest magazine issue, the RaiderTake blog talked about it, and Raider Greg shares the story.

Segment #4: "The 2013 NFL Draft begins in Two Days!"

Most of Raider Nation expects, and hopes, that Reggie McKenzie will trade down out of the 3rd overall pick in order to pick up an extra pick or picks. We will soon find out who Reggie picks, to begin his rebuilding of the Oakland Raiders through the draft.

Show #371 Online: "Reggie McKenzie's Matrix - Oakland Raiders Reloaded"
« Reply #198 on: April 12, 2013, 05:18:08 PM »

TOPICS:

Segment #1: "Just FLYNN Baby!"

Carson Palmer is out (traded to Arizona) and Matt Flynn is in (acquired by trade from the Seattle Seahawks). The Seahawks will receive a fifth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and a conditional pick in the 2015 draft. This leaves a big question mark on Terrelle Pryor. The Raiders say there will be an open competition, but they are still bringing other QBs in to Alameda for tryouts, so what is their thinking about Pryor? We hear some of Matt Flynn's introductory press conference and Raider Greg gives his opinion on these developments.

Segment #2: "What is Reggie McKenzie's Matrix? - New free agent signings"

The Raiders signed several new defensive players, running back Rashad Jennings, and there are reports of more players coming in to Alameda almost on a daily basis. GM Reggie McKenzie is getting out from under the expensive contracts and signing a lot of short-term deals at reasonable prices. We should have a lot of cap space in 2014 as a result. We go over some of the latest developments.

Segment #3: "The NFL Draft is only two weeks away!"

The draft will be here before we know it. Will Reggie trade our #3 overall pick away to get more picks? We will know soon.

Show #370 Online: "BURN IT TO THE GROUND! - Raiders' 2013 Makeover"
« Reply #197 on: March 25, 2013, 01:54:53 AM »

TOPICS:

Segment #1: "Tuck THIS!"

NFL owners approved all six of the rule changes proposed by the Competition Committee, including the elimination of the "tuck rule". The rule that never should have been, which stopped the Raiders from advancing to the AFC Championship game on January 19, 2002. Raider nation is a little upset that the NFL defended the rule for so long, and now is finally eliminating it. We relive that painful event one more time, and Raider Greg gives his take.

Segment #2: "Burn it to the GROUND!"

GM Reggie McKenzie looks to be beginning a major rebuilding of the Raiders by not retaining a few former key players and picking up some reasonably priced free agents for our defense. Will there be any more free agent moves, or have we seen the last for this off-season? Raider Greg gives his thoughts.

Segment #3: "What will Reggie do in the Raiders 2013 draft?"

Will we keep our #3 overall pick and use it ourselves? If so, on who? Defensive lineman? Linebacker? Quarterback? Will Reggie trade down for more picks? Will we take a QB in the later rounds? What about Carson Palmer's situation. That could have a major bearing on what we do in the upcoming draft. Will Terrelle Pryor be our starting QB, or will it be someone we don't yet have?

Segment #1: "Raiders News Tidbits"

Raider Greg covers a few tidbits of Raiders news. What are the Raiders' plans? Will we gain any free agents, or just lose them? What will Reggie McKenzie do in the draft? Raider Greg goes on a rant.

Segment #2: "Raiders Free Agent Fragility"

The Raiders have quite a few free agents. We haven't heard of much in the re-signing area, other than the restructuring of Mike Brisiel's contract. Nnamdi Asumugha is a free agent. Will the Raiders make a move for him? Will we keep Carson Palmer? What will happen with Terrell Pryor? We haven't heard much from the Raiders lately. Do they have a secret plan? We should start finding out some things soon, as free agency starts next week.

Segment #3: "The 2013 NFL Scouting Combine Recap and Draft Preview"

This year's NFL Scouting Combine received more television and internet coverage than ever before. Dennis Allen and some Raiders assistant coaches and scouts were there. Did they spot some talent they like and may go after in the draft?

Show #368 Online: "Raiders Asst. Coaches Meet Media and Other Raiders News"
« Reply #195 on: February 21, 2013, 12:56:32 AM »

TOPICS:

Segment #1: "King Goodell?"

It was recently reported that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made $29.5 Million in 2011. Raider Greg gives his opinion on this story.

Segment #2: "New Raiders Coaching Staff Meets The Media"

The new Raiders assistant coaches met with the media at Raiders headquarters recently. There are videos of the meetings on Raiders.com and we added some of the audio to this show. Questions and answers with new Raiders Offensive Coordinator Greg Olson, O-Line Coach Tony Sparano, Special Teams Coach Bobby April, and Linebackers Coach Bob Sanders. Raider Greg watched the videos and gives you his impression of the new coaches and what they said.

Segment #3: "Mt. Davis will be tarped over for the 2013 season"

In a new approach to selling out the Oakland Coliseum for every game to avoid television blackouts, the Raiders will tarp over the upper deck of Mt. Davis this season. This will reduce the capacity of the Coliseum to 53,250 (down from 64,200). People with season tickets in that upper section will be relocated to the 3rd deck of the "old" section of the Coliseum. Since those Mt. Davis ticket holders were paying $25 per game, all other seats in the 3rd deck will be reduced in price down to $25 per game. Raider Greg is happy. His 3rd deck 50 yd. line seat will drop from his original $82 per game price down to $25 per game. The other sections of the Coliseum will see a $1 per game reduction in price.

TOPICS:

Segment #1: "Superbowl XXXVII is News Ten Years Later?"

Tim Brown has been giving out his opinion that Bill Callahan, Raiders head coach for their 2003 Superbowl XXXVII appearance, actually "sabotaged" the game for the Raiders - to let his "friend" and Superbowl opponent Jon Gruden win the game for the Tampa Bay Bucs. Raider Greg gives him feelings on the story, plus we hear from several Raiders players from that team on radio 95.7 "The Game".

Show #362 Online: "Rumors Running Wild - Raiders Bringing Jon Gruden Back?"
« Reply #189 on: December 15, 2012, 05:01:13 AM »

TOPICS:

Segment #1: "Condolences to Dennis Allen and family"

Dennis Allen was informed on Monday that his 66 year old father and ex-NFL player had suffered cardiac arrest and was in intensive care. Coach Gruden flew to his bedside, but his father did not regain consciousness. He was taken off of life support yesterday. Raider Nation is saddened, and we send out heartfelt condolences.

Segment #2: "W.W.A.D.D."

What would Al Davis do? If Al Davis was still running the Raiders in 2012, what would he be doing right about now, and at the end of the season? We hear thoughts from Greg Papa, Bill Romanowski and Rod Woodson via "The Football Hour" segment on 95.7 "The Game" radio.

Segment #3: "Raiders NFL Draft 2013"

What will the Raiders do in the 2013 NFL Draft? Who will they pick in the first round? Will they keep that pick or trade out for multiple extra picks? Raider Greg gives his thoughts and we hear from 95.7 "The Game" draft correspondent Russ Lande, who has done one of the first mock drafts.

Segment #4: "Have the Raiders spoken to Jon Gruden about returning or not?"

A rumor began yesterday with Hub Arkush of Pro Football Weekly, saying that they got reliable information that the Raiders have spoken with Jon Gruden regarding a position with the team. Initially Raider Greg started doing this segment with the idea that this was just a rumor and probably had no substance. Just after finishing the podcast, more information came out via radio 95.7 "The Game" supporting this story. The Raiders then sent a message out to the media, which was read on 95.7, saying that these rumors were false. Raiders' media relations head Zak Gilbert added that he felt it was in poor taste by the media to be spreading such rumors at a time like this, when Dennis Allen had just lost his father. The staff at 95.7 "The Game" then had Hub Arkush on via telephone to tell his own story. We have included audio of all of this in this segment of the podcast. It will be interesting to see what comes of all this.

« Reply #187 on: November 22, 2012, 12:33:11 AM »

TOPICS:

Segment #1: "Trouble In The NFL - Attendance down in the stadiums"

We do a little segment on the NFL's concerns about decreased attendance. TV viewership of NFL games is up. Greg gives you some of the stats.

Segment #2: "Saints @ Raiders Postgame"

The Saints complete the trifecta of three losses in a row for the Raiders, this one by the score of 38-17 Saints. The only real bright spots were the running of Marcel Reece, some of the passing of Carson Palmer, and that's about it. Raider Greg does his best job of recapping a depressing afternoon. The day did start out with a great tailgate party, as usual. We had a host of Raider Nation Podcast listeners in attendance, and Greg will tell you all about it. We also hear parts of Dennis Allen's Monday press conference following the loss to the Saints. We also hear a segment he did this week on Bay Area radio station 95.7 "The Game".

Segment #3: "Raiders @ Bengals Pregame"

A preview of this upcoming game in Cincinnati. In addition to Raider Greg's thoughts on the matchup, we hear from Bill Romanowski and his recollections and opinions of the Bengals. We also hear from Tom Flores, as he comments on the matchup and the comments made by Raiders owner Mark Davis.

TOPICS:

Segment #1: "Buccaneers @ Raiders Postgame"

The Raiders fell behind by 18 points late in the game, but put together an exciting finish. They scored two touchdowns plus a two point conversion while keeping the Bucs from scoring, to pull within 3 points. They then forced a punt to set themselves up for a final drive to either tie or win in the final minute. But an interception ended the comeback attempt and turned to Coliseum from earsplitting excitement, into a mumbling crowd of disappointed fans heading for the exits. Raider Greg breaks down the game. We also hear some comments from Raiders head coach Dennis Allen.

Segment #2: "Raiders @ Ravens Pregame"

The Raiders travel cross country to go against Joe Flaco, Ray Rice, and the rest of the Ravens, minus Ray Lewis at least. We hear Raider Greg's analysis plus a sound clip from Bay Area radio station 95.7 "The Game", where they interview Hall of Famer and former Raider Rod Woodson.
