Davis says Gilbert firing not a shot at McKenzie

On the firing of Zak Gilbert, Mark Davis said, "The next media relations director must completely understand the significance of protecting the shield -- and, moreover, the man who built it and lived it until the day he died."

He also answered questions about a new stadium, the resignation of Amy Trask, a "Raiders Hall of Fame", and more.

Silver argued that Hue Jackson was getting the team in the right direction but Mark Davis fired Zak Gilbert because he was preaching how McKenzie landed in salary cap position & was faced with tough decisions. I beleve that Mike Silver agreed with that last statement (like anyone would) but the underlying message of Zak Gilbert firing was that there were people in Alamaeda ready to throw the great name Al Davis under the bus and turn McKenzie into some light at the end of the tunnel saviour.

Hue was power hungry and screwed us all over for Carson Palmer. Also, despite his great offensive mind and seemingly having the organization in his hand - could not get rid/demote Chuck Bresnahan! Just thinking about that defense makes me want to vomit.

To fire a coach midseason is very rare. If Dennis Allen stuck it out with Greg Knapp then Hue Jackson was always going to wait it out & fire Bresnahan in the offseason. I don't know who was in charge when Bresnahan got the boot but I do remember Hue Jackson telling Rod Woodson his services wouldn't be needed. I assume the defensive co-ordinator was fired before the DB Assistant.

I believe the players were more inclined to play for Hue then Dennis Allen, Don't get me wrong I agree with your statement that Hue had no control of his players (McClain gun incident) but that doesn't nessecarily mean that the players wouldn't play for him.

Dennis Allen was lambasted by Rolando McClain because he didn't respect the head coach. Richard Seymour whom i've always thought of a warrior suddenly had a sore vagina and missed the last 8 or so games because I believe he didn't believe in Dennis Allen. (He had checked out)

Not trying to have a personal gripe at you MattyRaider.. This is just how I interpreted some of your statements.

and here's that Sports Illustrated article about the Raiders during Al Davis' final years. This article apparently prompted Mark Davis to send Zak Gilbert home for the last several weeks while he decided his fate. I'm not sure what Mark Davis thought Zak Gilbert had to do with the article, but he must have thought he was somehow responsible for the way the article was written or the information that was in it.

Raiders Announce Changes in Personnel Department

and the housecleaning continues...Two fired, two retired.

One of the guys who retired, Kent McCloughan, was with the team for 47 years as a player then scout. He made the following statement:

“I had talked to Al Davis when I turned 65,” said McCloughan, who first joined the organization in the mid-1960s as a standout cornerback, “and he said, ‘Listen, young man: You’re not quitting before I do.’ I owe him a lot. He was so nice to my family and me. We had some great years, including when Ron Wolf was with us. We won a lot of games. I had the opportunity to work 47 years with one team. I enjoyed it so much. I thought Al Davis was an outstanding person and boss. I enjoyed the scouting department, the coaches and players I had the opportunity to work with, and I’ll always be a Raider. I’m going out about as good as a person can go out. You couldn’t have written a better story for me. I have the NFL Sunday Ticket, and I’ll still be watching all the games. I might even come out to training camp. I wish Reggie and the entire organization the best.”

P.S. My physical therapist, who is a Packers fan....was just telling me two days ago that he had been reading a Packers blog....about concerns that Reggie McKenzie might raid the Packers scouting staff....since he had fired Jon Kingdon. Looks like they had reason to be concerned.

Reggie McKenzie has strong bond with his twin brother

Lots of interesting stuff to learn about Reggie in this article, such as...

On graduation day at Austin-East High School, Reggie McKenzie was the valedictorian, ranked first in his class. (Twin brother) Raleigh was ranked No. 3. "I know this is hard to believe, but Reggie even ran on the four-by-100 relay team,'' said Sam Anderson, who taught and coached at Austin-East and has known the McKenzies since they were in the eighth grade. "They competed against each other very hard, in everything.''

The brothers share a sly sense of humor and enjoyed putting their nearly identical looks to use. "I taught American Government and they tried to see if they could switch on me," Anderson said. "I'm not sure why it even mattered _ Reginald was making an A-plus and Raleigh had an A-minus. I think they enjoyed just trying to trick me.''

Davis said he is not courting Los Angeles. He emphatically denied a recent report that he joined Southern California developer Ed Roski, who is chasing a franchise for L.A., at a Clippers basketball game.

Zak Gilbert, most recently the "Chief Assistant" in the Green Bay Packers PR office, will assume the "Director of Media Relations" position with the Raiders....a position formerly held by Mike Taylor. Taylor will become "Director of Public Affairs", a position that did not previously exist on the Raiders organizational chart.

I mean, if you had a billion-dollar development you were working on--which is what a stadium costs these days--would you want Herrera anywhere near it?
