Update on Raiders moves in terms of salary cap - $16 Mil Under
Steve Corkran, BayAreaNewsGroup

...Raiders have $16 million in cap space for 2013, even though they have an astonishing $32 million in dead money — money accounted for on players no longer on the roster...

For those wondering why the Raiders didn’t cut McClain on Tuesday, it’s simple: They didn’t have to and there’s still a chance, albeit slim, that another team will pony up a late-round draft pick for McClain.
Hey, it’s worth a shot.

"Legal Tampering" begins tonight at 9pm Pacific....3 days ahead of Free Agency

"Tonight the "legal tampering" period precursor to Free Agency begins. This is when teams and agents can start to negotiate contracts, 3 days ahead of Free Agency. Every single NFL team used to break the tampering rules each year, so the league just went ahead and changed the rules, making it legal to "tamper" in this period. Here is the gist of it..."

I always get confused about how the salary cap works, so I did a search for answers. This article is one of the easier to understand. It has an example of a player with a 5-year contract having various bonuses in different years, and explains exactly how much cap hit that player would generate in each year of his contract. It explains the "signing bonus", the "option bonus", the "roster bonus", guaranteed money, pro-rating a bonus, renegotiating a contract, and more.
